German forces expelled from Finland. US and Soviet troops meet at the Elbe River in Germany.

TUESDAY, APRIL 28
Having been caught the previous day, Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini is executed and hung upside down

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29
German forces in Italy surrender. US troops liberate the Dachau concentration camp where they discover evidence of gruesome medical experiements.

THURSDAY, APRIL30
Adolf Hitler along with his wife of one day, Eva Braun, commit suicide in a Berlin bunker as Soviet troops advance through the city.

FRIDAY, MAY 1

Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels who was to be the new German Chancellor, kills himself in the Fuhrerbunker after fatally poisoning his wife and their six children. Karl Donitz is named as Hitler's successor. The concentration camp at Stutthof, Poland, is liberated by the Red Army.


SATURDAY, MAY 2
Near 1,000,000 German men in Italy & Austria surrender. Soviet troops capture and complete the Battle of Berlin. The remaining troops in Italy surrender.

May 6, 1945 Hermann Goring (Hitler's Second In Command) surrenders. German forces in Breslau surrender.
May 7, 1945 Germany surrenders unconditionally.
May 8, 1945 Official Victory Day in Europe (VE), some celebrate May 9 because of the time difference.
May 9, 1945 Soviet troops occupy Prague and the Allies liberate the Channel Islands.
August 6, 1945 US B-29 (Enola Gay) drops atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan.
August 8, 1945 The USSR declares war on Japan.
August 9, 1945 US B-29 (Bock's Car) drops atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan.
August 14, 1945 Japan agrees to unconditionally surrender.
August 15, 1945 Victory Day over Japan (VJ) is declared
September 2, 1945 Japan signs formal surrender. World War 2, the most devastating war in human history, ends six years later, when Hitler invaded Poland on September 1, 1939.
